Stretchmarks & Scarring

Stetchmarks and scarring

Stretchmarks are common on the abdomen, hips, legs and chest areas. They form from tiny tears in the structure of the skin. Other scars are created from wounds to the skin or inflammation resulting from acne. Essentially, the body creates a scar by inducing fibrous tissue to cover these wounds to the skin, and this tends to be disorganised collagen leading to a raised red (and later white) area of skin that looks different from the surrounding skin.

In some cases, the body produces too much collagen in response to the inflammation, and the scarring can have a significant impact on self-esteem. In some people, the scar can appear worse as pigmentation appears in the area left by the inflamed skin, and this is usually managed at the same time as the scar treatments.

There are a number of treatments that help to manage scarring and stretchmarks and it is likely that your doctor will suggest using a combination of these modalities to ensure better results. These might include:
• TriFractional
• VoluDerm
• Microneedling
• Chemical peels or topical skin care for management of pigmentation
• LED Phototherapy

VoluDerm HE Technology

Restoring elasticity and plumping the skin

VoluDerm HE is a minimally invasive solution that uses fine micro-needles applying RF and non-thermal electrical energy to gently ablate the epidermal layer and volumize the dermal layer. The micro-needles stimulate the body to naturally produce hyaluronic acid, new collagen and elastin. VoluDerm HE is used to tighten loose abdominal skin, improve the appearance of stretchmarks on arms, thighs and abdomen, and reduce the appearance of scarring on the body.

Trifractional Technology

Effective skin resurfacing

TriFractional enables effective fractional skin resurfacing and is suitable for enhancing the VoluDerm HE treatment. TriFractional energy creates micro wounds which trigger the body’s natural healing response mechanism, inducing production of new collagen to create healthy skin tissue. Each complete TriFractional application is comprised of three sequential pulses which enables the RF energy to penetrate the tissue comfortably, without overheating.
TriFractional treatments are used for the management of stretchmarks and scarring.

Microneedling

Your doctor will use a sterile individual cartridge to create micro-channels in the skin. This initiates a healing cascade in the body, releasing of growth factors that encourage production of new collagen, as well as re-organising disorganised collagen in the area of the scar.

LED Phototherapy

An exciting discovery for me was a recent study that demonstrated that a very precise protocol lead to an 80% improvement in the appearance of stretch marks, even those that have been around for a significant period of time. This relatively easy treatment has the added advantage of being a safe and non-invasive treatment in teenagers suffering from stretchmarks.
