Microneedling

Dermapen® Microneedling

Microneedling is increasingly popular as a minimally invasive yet highly effective skin rejuvenation treatment. Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, it makes use of an innovative device – a Dermapen® – to painlessly create micro-channels in the skin. The skin immediately responds by triggering a process of self-repair. This process stimulates cells in the skin to produce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, as well as improving absorption of products designed to rejuvenate and repair skin tissue. The effects of this stimulation and oxygenation in the dermis, along with resurfacing, result in smoother, tighter, more radiant skin.

Dermapen® Microneedling has the wonderful advantage of treating multiple skin concerns at the same time:

  • Loss of elasticity
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dark circles under the eye
  • Enlarged pores
  • Smoker’s lines
  • Photodamage
  • Pigmentation and hypopigmentation
  • Rosacea
  • Management of Acne and acne scarring

…. Along with many other difficult to manage skin conditions

Unlike many other skin treatments available in the aesthetic field today, this treatment is one of the few that can successfully tighten and strengthen skin in delicate areas not suited to energy-based treatments eg under the eye, neck and chest. In addition, it is one of the few proven treatments to have an effect on both collagen and elastin production, hence it’s success in photo-damaged skin with significant loss of elasticity. It can also be used in darker skins where light-based treatments have a far higher risk for post-treatment inflammatory pigmentation.

Results can be seen after a single treatment, but in most cases, a course of 3 treatments of between 2 weeks and 6 weeks apart (depending on the condition being treated) is recommended.

Results can be enhanced by pre-conditioning the skin, and in some cases, you may be recommended to increase your intake of vitamin C and zinc for 4 weeks prior to a course of treatment (essential in smokers). Your doctor will discuss this with you during your consultation.

Medical Microneedling

Your doctor will use a medical grade microneedling device to perform more targeted medical treatments, and will also be able to use the latest advances in aesthetic medicine to enhance the anti-aging properties of the treatment modality: eg growth factor rich Platelet-Rich Plasma (see Plasma Performance Therapy©), hyaluronic acid and skin peels. Growth factors are specialised proteins found in many different cell types within the body. They have many functions, with the most important being the activation of cellular renewal. They do this by activating a signal pathway to regulate all the activities of the cells in the skin. Playing a variety of roles, they help to maintain the skin’s youthful appearance by increasing cell renewal, cell defence, blood circulation and collagen and elastin production.

Courses of these combination treatments are highly recommended prior to a big event

What Can You Expect?

Your doctor may apply a layer of topical numbing gel to eliminate discomfort before applying the treatment gel or PRP to your skin and gliding the microneedling device thoroughly over your skin. This process results in thousands of superficial microscopic channels forming throughout the entire treatment area.

The skin may be red for 2 to 3 days following a treatment. Very occasionally you may experience some mild peeling or bruising following a deeper treatment eg in areas of scarring or sun damage.

Changes in the skin tend to be visible within a few days of treatment, with ongoing improvement from the treatment over the course of several weeks. Results can continue to improve up to 6 months after a treatment as collagen production continues. In skin that has more photo-damage, at least 3 treatments a month apart are recommended for optimal improvements in complexion and skin texture.
