Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are small injections of gel that fill wrinkles and add volume to soft tissue to restore lost volume to your face. You can have dermal fillers around the eye, cheeks, jawline and mouth. Lip fillers are administered directly into the lip tissue.

There are many factors in our current lifestyle that lead to accelerated aging in the skin; from nutrient deficiencies or changes in hormone levels, to sun exposure and environmental pollution. Over time, the active cells in the skin, the fibroblasts, become less efficient at producing collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid leading to skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkles, along with uneven pigmentation.

Dermal fillers are typically made up of hyaluronic acid that fill in wrinkles to smooth deep set lines.  The hyaluronic acid is a natural substance which is found in many areas of the body and it helps to maintain shape, provide lift, even out depressions in the skin and provides hydration.

What can you expect?

There may be slight discomfort while the filler is being administered but this can be minimised by applying an anaesthetic cream to the area before treatment.  Some patients may experience side effects immediately after the injection that include swelling, redness, pain, itching, bruising and tenderness.  These reactions usually start to disappear shortly after the injection and it may take a few days to resolve completely.

Most dermal fillers will last between 6 to 18 months, depending on the treatment.
