Are you ready for SWIMSUIT SEASON?

The sun is already out and after the winter we’ve just had, you may be feeling a little self-conscious to take your shirt off. Dr Kim Prescott discusses some of the treatments that can help to restore your confidence.

Why is the waist measurement so important?

Losing excess weight around your middle is not simply a vanity issue; it’s a major health issue too. In one large study, men with the highest waist-to-height ratio died 16.7 years earlier than the study average. Excess adipose tissue in the abdomen is metabolically active, producing hormones and inflammatory substances that are associated with insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, dementia and the onset of type 2 diabetes. If you carry your weight around your waist, you have an increased risk of chronic disease, even if your BMI is within the healthy range.

If you feel like your body is resisting your efforts to lose weight, a health professional with training in weight loss may be able to help you achieve your weight loss goals with a personalised weight loss programme. Your doctor will be able towork with you to achieve your goals, and in some circumstances, it may be appropriate to make use of licensed weight loss medications. It is important that these programmes have adequate medical oversight and long-term follow-up in order to help achieve the long-term goal of overall improvements in health and wellbeing.

Concerned with toning and contouring?

A change in diet and exercise is the first place to start, but some people successfully lose weight overall but struggle to lose weight around the waist. Non-invasive body contouring technologies are increasingly sophisticated and can make a huge difference to areas that are difficult to treat. Cellulite management, buttock lifting, upper arms, and tummy tucks are commonly requested areas.

Muscle sculpting

Pictures of athletes and celebrities rocking Emsculpt® paddles have flooded the world of social media, and the most cynical of doctors have tried – and raved about – the latest electromechanical stimulation (EMS) machines to hit the body sculpting arena. The idea that you could undergo the equivalent of 20,000 stomach crunches in 30 minutes without breaking a sweat leaves personal trainers twitching, but there are many people who struggle to exercise certain areas due to hernias, resistant fat or previous injuries. The fact that we have a machine that is able to tone and strengthen these areas to reduce the potential for injury, improve back pain and sculpt buttocks – with no downtime – has resulted in an explosion in the popularity of machines of this kind.

It’s a great treatment for the stomach, buttocks, arms and calves.

Emsculpt® uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy to trigger supramaximal contractions that cannot be achieved by voluntary muscle action. What sets it apart is the fact that it not only destroys the fat cells ensuring that they are metabolised by the body, but also causes the muscles to undergo cellular changes resulting in strengthening of the entire muscle. Treatments can be conducted 3 to 4 days apart so a course of 4 is complete within 2 weeks for faster results.

What about cellulite and resistant fat?

Radiofrequency really takes centre stage for helping to manage these areas. LipoFirm Fat Reduction Triple Action Fat Reduction has long been the celebrity favourite with treatments like the LP Buttock Lift and abdominal sculpting regularly featuring on social media.

LipoFirm TriLipo combines treatment modalities in a single delivery system: Dynamic Muscle Activation (DMA) and radiofrequency, for fat reduction and skin tightening. DMA results in powerful muscle contractions that allow the body to burn fat efficiently, and radiofrequency is used for further fat reduction and skin tightening.

How do I find the right treatment for me?

There are many body contouring technologies available, and each will have particular areas where they are better suited. It’s important to consult an experienced practitioner who understands the available technologies and who can help you find the best solution for your particular concerns. Most people will get the most satisfaction from combination treatments, so it’s ideal to attend a clinic that can offer you a number of different options.

If you would like to discuss the treatment options that might be best for you, then please email your questions to or call to book an online consultation.
